on display on the main (1st) floor of the library
in the Information Commons South
Bruce T. Halle, founder and chairman of Discount Tire, began collecting vintage posters in 1982. Never imagining the collection would grow to the size it is today, there are now over 330 posters currently on display at the company’s corporate headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona. The collection consists of posters printed in more than seventeen countries and dating from 1888 to the mid 1970s. Though many differ in their approach, most are based on the advertising style of the French belle époque, a time when color lithography flourished. The innovative printing process was fueled by rapid industrialization and marketing of modern commodities. Vibrant posters of iconic characters and beautiful women resulted, provoking motorists to purchase innovative products to enhance their rapidly changing lifestyle with the advent of the automobile. The posters illustrate the relationship between art and commerce, simultaneously charting the evolution of the rubber and advertising industries from their inception. The selection from the Collection of Discount Tire depicts the history of two markets which, combined with the creativity of the top artists during the period, disseminated information about the round rubber objects known as tires.
Please enjoy the exhibition in Information Commons South.
This exhibition marks the tenth anniversary of the Bruce T. Halle Library and was produced in association with the Eastern Michigan University Foundation and the Collection of Discount Tire. - Mon, 22 Sep 2008 18:13:28 EDT Chronicle of Higher Education and the Chronicle of Philanthropy - Campus-wide License to Online Editions Now Available The EMU Bruce T. In many areas, the respondents corroborated what we learned from the Graduate Student Survey. Both groups of users access our resources and services remotely far more often than they come to the building; in fact, over 50% of both faculty and graduate student respondents make virtual library visits on a daily or weekly basis. According to both surveys, faculty and graduate students overall rely more heavily on journals than books for their work and electronic journals are definitely preferred over their paper counterparts. The number of faculty utilizing library instruction for their classes is surprisingly low, but two-thirds of the respondents feel more instruction for students should be offered. Faculty report that their satisfaction with service quality has improved since LibQUAL in 2003; the ratings and comments this time around are overwhelmingly positive. - Fri, 11 Aug 2006 11:51:03 EDT Faculty: Electronic Reserves Training, Fall 2006 - Wed, 02 Aug 2006 14:46:32 EDT Indian Film Festival and Discussion, April 17-18 - Mon, 17 Apr 2006 18:14:50 EDT Electronic Reserves Training Electronic Reserves Training

Chris Mayda -- Hog Production - Sat, 01 Oct 2005 13:39:41 EDT Library Catalog and Databases Unavailable for about 1 hour on 8/25/2005 starting at 5:05 p.m. On Thursday, August 25, 2005 beginning at 5:05 p.m. the EMU Library Catalog and EMU Supscription databases will be UNAVAILABLE for about 1 hour. - Wed, 24 Aug 2005 14:02:45 EDT GoogleScholar@EMU With the Scholar service, Google has refined its search algorithm to identify on the free, public Internet “scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research.” It has also developed a way to extract citations to books and articles from the bibliographies of the materials it indexes. These citations, while listed on Google Scholar result screens, do not link directly to additional information. As the ‘About Google Scholar’ page notes, “[t]his means your search results may include citations of older works and seminal articles that appear only in books or other offline publications.”
Why use Google Scholar? Its vast index of many types of publications spanning the gamut of human investigation and knowledge often means you will turn up some new perspectives that you did not uncover using more narrowly focused research tools. It is, therefore, ANOTHER tool you can use to facilitate your discovery of illuminating resources, but not the ONLY tool. - Thu, 18 Aug 2005 13:22:31 EDT Faculty: Electronic Reserves Training Schedule, Fall 2005 Faculty: Learn how to use the library's Electronic Reserves system during 1 training session lasting 45 - 60 minutes. While you can enter references into RefWorks manually, in most cases references can be imported into RefWorks from electronic databases, either directly or from saved text files. No (or minimal) typing! All your references are stored on the RefWorks server, so you can access them from any location with an Internet connection. The EMU Graduate School and the University Library have together purchased a one year subscription to the service. - Thu, 04 Aug 2005 16:16:19 EDT Library Newsletter Library Matters, the EMU Library newsletter, keeps readers informed of our news, programs, and policies. - Wed, 01 Jun 2005 15:32:15 EDT Faculty: Plagiarism Assessment Service Turn-It-In To help promote awareness of and the practice of academic integrity, Eastern Michigan University has subscribed to TurnItIn.com, a web-based service that compares submitted student text against a database of millions previously published documents, including those on the public Internet, the proprietary collection of the ProQuest company, as well as every student paper ever submitted to TurnItIn.com, including previously submitted EMU papers. - Tue, 09 Aug 2005 16:26:08 EDT Faculty: Make your course reserves available 24/7 with Electronic Reserves Faculty can easily create their own course pages and add materials on their own after a short 30-45 minute workshop during which an account is set up.
